Winsome Earle-Sears, the first woman of color to serve as Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, recently shared her inspiring views on the opportunities America offers. She spoke passionately about her father’s journey from Jamaica to the United States, armed with only $1.75 in his pocket. Her father’s story, she asserts, is a testament to the promise and possibilities available to all in America.
Earle-Sears emphasized the role of education in her father's success, noting that despite starting with so little, he achieved a comfortable retirement as an immigrant. She addressed common narratives about racial inequalities, stating, "And some people would say that he was back in the starting blocks while a white child was halfway at the completion line. But I would say to you, my father used education—education—to get him where he is now."
Highlighting the progress in American society, Earle-Sears pointed out the significant milestones reached by African Americans, such as the election of a Black president and a vice president with a Jamaican heritage similar to her family's. She encourages children to view themselves as "overcomers," rejecting the notion of victimhood and the need for a "political savior." Her message is one of empowerment, urging young people to embrace their own potential and the opportunities that America provides.
